Remove FileVault Master Password

Getting rid of your Mac but not restoring from disc? For the next person, you should remove the FileVault Master Password.

Under 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, you can do this by:

  1. Unlock all FileVault protected user home directories first.
  2. Remove the files “FileVaultMaster.keychain” and “FileVaultMaster.cer” in “/Library/Keychains” the folder.
  3. Restart computer.

Remember, this just removes the master password and DOES NOT unlock previously locked files. If you get rid of the old master password certificate, you won’t be able to unlock the FileVault protected directories with a new master password. Now only the actual user passwords will work.
